The side gallery features a survey of works (1947 to date) by historic Bay Area artist José Ramón Lerma.  He is among the important artists whose careers are most associated with the San Francisco school of Abstract-Expressionism.

José Ramón Lerma studied at the California School of Fine Arts in San Francisco (now San Francisco Art Institute)  from 1950 to 1958 where he received his Bachelor’s of Fine Arts.  His education was interrupted by three years of U.S. Army service in Korea .

Early on he was influenced by the ‘Mexican School’ – as were many of his post WWII colleagues.  Lerma’s style evolved following exposure to the teachers and students of abstract expressionism and nearly his entire body of work embraces it and pays homage to dada and surrealism.

In addition to painting Lerma has done assemblage, collage, constructions, drawings and made prints.  His work has been in several gallery and museum shows nationwide since 1955.  Fundraising has begun for the production of a documentary film chronicling José Ramón Lerma’s life and art.

Artist’s Reception:

A  DOCUMENTARY  IN  THE  MAKING

José Ramón Lerma has been making art for over six decades – and continues to work today – though he has mostly remained “under the radar.” For whatever reasons, it is not due to a lack of output, either in quantity or quality.  Jose’ maintained his commitment to making art and survived through hard times and good times. In 2004 the SF Board of Supervisors honored the artistic contributions of Mr. Lerma and his continuing work as a pioneer in the arts.

Independent curator Hanna Regev hopes to make a documentary film about José Ramón Lerma’s life and art.  Toward this end, and in recognition of Lerma’s importance and contributions to the San Francisco School of Abstract Expressionism, we will be displaying a small selection of his pieces in our side gallery, with the intention of featuring a more complete retrospective in our main gallery space in 2010.  We view this exhibition as a preview of next year’s show.

Hanna Regev is raising funds for production of the documentary.  She has arranged for art filmmaker William Farley to memorialize the opening reception on Saturday September 12 as a part for the fundraiser effort. We at ArtZone are diligently seeking friends, family, collectors, colleagues, fans and art enthusiasts to show support for José Ramón Lerma by attending the opening. We thank you in advance for your considerations.

If you have any questions about or interest in making a donation

for the production, you may contact Hanna Regev directly at 415-566-7515 or rgv18@pacbell.net.

NATIONAL HISPANIC HERITAGE MONTH

The US Department of Health & Human Services recognizes and celebrates Hispanic Americans' commitment to family values, community, civic involvement, and the generations of contributions that continue to enrich and strengthen our nation.  ArtZone 461 Gallery is proud to present José Ramón Lerma’s Exhibition and celebrate his accomplishments during National Hispanic Heritage Month*.

*In September 1968, Congress authorized President Lyndon B. Johnson to proclaim National Hispanic Heritage Week, which was observed during the week that included September 15th and 16th. The observance was expanded in 1988 to a month long celebration (September 15 to October 15). America celebrates the culture and traditions of those who trace their roots to Spain, Mexico and the Spanish-speaking nations of Central America, South America and the Caribbean.
