ArtZone 461 Gallery is pleased to present a new series of Adam Cahoon paintings titled, "Portraits of an Absurd Nature."  The works are not limited to traditional portraits and the title intimates Nature itself may be a subject of portraiture.  An interesting feature of some works is their art historical references portrayed in a contemporary or futuristic approach.

'Absurd Nature' is an oxymoron because whether 'absurd' or 'regular' - whichever concept one understands as the opposite of absurd - both remain natural phenomena.  Cahoon seeks to find relevance for abstract concepts and scientific theory in our daily lives.  His interests include explorations of quantum physics, gravity, black holes and string theory and his paintings at least provide a context for viewing, if not an understanding of these ideas.

The artist explains, "When these abstract concepts and theories are painted in the setting of familiar, natural environments, the theoretical can exist in a setting with physical, tangible, and relatable properties.  It is this relationship between the abstract concept and the natural environment as its vessel for understanding that interests me."

His goal is not to produce answers, but to allow an investigation of these abstract theories within the environments he creates for them.

Cahoon received his B.A. in 2004 from the San Francisco Art Institute.  He spent time abroad before returning to painting and San Francisco.  This is his first solo show in ArtZone's Main Gallery space.
