Art Hazelwood calls himself an artist, impresario and instigator.  He has put together artists’ retrospectives, organized nationwide political art shows, and curated several museum exhibitions including the traveling show, Hobos to Street People: Artists’ Responses to Homelessness from the New Deal to the Present.  He also curated a history of the relief print in Northern California at St. Mary’s College Art Museum in Moraga, California in 2009, and a show on the political art of the 1930s, at the de Saisset Museum at Santa Clara University in 2012.

Hazelwood worked with William Wolff over the last eight years of his life as his archivist, and curator.  He has organized several exhibitions of Wolff’s work including the 2002 retrospective at St. Mary’s College Art Museum, Masquerade and Revelation: A William Wolff Retrospective, curated with Julie Armistead.

Hazelwood’s artwork ranges from screenprint posters to fine press artist books and public art projects. His prints are in several collections including the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Library of Congress and regularly appear in homeless activist street papers including the Street Sheet and Street Spirit.  He has been a project based guest artist in Katya McCulloch’s print class at San Quentin State Prison since 2008.  He currently teaches printmaking at the San Francisco Art Institute.

I worked with William Wolff (1922-2004) over the last eight years of his life as his archivist, curator and friend.  Delving into his work so deeply had a profound influence on my own work.  There are four major ways Wolff’s prints have influenced me – the cutting technique of his woodcuts, his use of color, his boldness of expression and his use of literary themes.

In this exhibition ArtZone 461 Gallery director Steven Lopez and I selected works that not only show Wolff’s influences but also presents his work in a new light.  One surprising example is seen by contrasting Wolff’s Apocalyptic and Christ imagery with my disaster capitalism subject matter.  This contrast provides a political background to Wolff’s work which was always inherent in his work but is here brought into starker relief – a place where satire and Apocalypse are seen to have much in common.
