THE SEDUCTION OF DUCHAMP
BAY AREA ARTISTS’ RESPONSE
CURATED BY:
Hanna Regev
& Steven Lopez
“I have been collecting and photographing man made discarded objects for several years without really considering to the fullest extent the influence Duchamp was playing in my work.
My work for this show focuses on Duchamp’s rejection of painting: Tu m’ (1918), a commissioned piece, being his last painting on canvas. While reading his article Apropos of Readymades, I was intrigued by the last sentence which I used in my piece and which was the inspiration for the images.
The title Ready tu m’aides is a play on words incorporating the title of Tu m’ (a French expression in which the verb is missing, equivalent to “you (blank) me”) and Readymades while encasing the piece in plexi both gives a nod to Duchamp’s past and to his irreverence to art as a “work of art”.” David Broom
