Best of Show went to San Francisco artist Agelio Batle for his piece, Black Growth, a work that appears at first glance to be an oil painting, but which is actually composed of graphite suspended in a matrix (in a ‘proprietary process’ the artist informs us) and then applied on wood panel...

Complex intricate tangles in two and three dimensions by Filipino-American artist Agelio Batle. The "paintings" are created in a unique graphite-based medium developed by the artist; the sculptures are composed of numerous short lengths of welded metal rods.

ArtZone 461 Gallery: Agelio Batle - Heads and Tales | ArtBusiness.com | Alan Bamberger | December 6, 2008

San Francisco sculptor and artist Agelio Batle and his wife, Delia, wanted to raise their two young sons and also run his art business from home, so they began to look for a true live-work space - not just a developer's make-believe live-work loft that's too small for a substantial studio, much less a family. It took months, but they found it on Potrero Hill, on the border between two distinct neighborhoods.
Agelio Batle's graphite sculptures, drawings and paintings are available in several museum stores, including those at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, the de Young and Museum of Craft & Design. "Heads and Tales," a solo show of his graphite paintings, will be on display Dec. 6 through Jan. 18 at ArtZone 461 Gallery.

Batles' Potrero Hill home echoes the past | San Francisco Chronicle | Zahid Sardar | November 26, 2008

Loose brushstrokes of bold color capture tense, complex, contemplative, sometimes amusing or strange situations with people who often directly engage the viewer.  Fisher’s mastery of medium and color, and ability to capture the psychological state of her subjects, even in the most ordinary of settings, results in beautifully captivating imagery.

A Fine View: Jane Fisher’s Downtime | Nob Hill Gazette | Chérie L. Turner | November 1, 2008

Twenty-year survey of paintings and works on paper by Jane Fisher, portraits and figure paintings for the most part, all adept. What gives Fisher's work depth and bite is that you know there's a story behind each piece-- either the one she tells you or the one you make up yourself.

Valencia Street, ground zero of the burgeoning Mission District in San Francisco, bustles with a cacophony of sights, sounds and interactions. Gourmets from other areas of San Francisco dodge the sidewalk action as they hunt for the storefront of the latest, cutting edge restaurant or check addresses for yet another new clothing or furniture boutique. Now, one can add art galleries to the Mission’s vibrant mix. Artists themselves have lived in the area for years, drawn by the lower rents and the cultural diversity. ArtZone 461 knows well the importance of a gallery’s place in a city...
“Promoting Bay Area artists has already been a part of my mission.” Lopez says.

The 75th Crocker-Kingsley: California’s Biennial | Crocker Art Museum | Michael Bishop: Juror | January 10, 2009

One of those big-picture artists, both figuratively and literally, is Oakland’s Gary Brewer. Ten years ago, dissatisfied with the abstractions he was then painting, he began depicting ancient bees and flies that had been preserved in amber. While not exactly socioeconomic alarm bells, these sumptuously painted meditations on nature, time and mortality struck a chord with viewers unafraid of inconvenient truths. Brewer was hardly crying wolf anyway: an entomologically-themed show that he curated in San Francisco was ironically entitled them, after the 1954 giant-ant movie.
                                                                                                            read more >http://www.artltdmag.com/index.php?subaction=showfull&id=1236385026&archive=&start_from=&ucat=18&page=show

The 75th Crocker- Kingsley Exhibition was almost orphaned this year because the Crocker didn't have a space large enough for the biennial competitive show while construction of the museum's new annex is going on. Awards were given in the amount of $6,250, with $3,000 going to the Best of Show prize won by San Franciscan Agelio Batle for a fistlike head limned with curvilinear lines of suspended graphite. On the other hand, there aren't a lot of strong paintings in the show, although Gage Opdenbrouw's nostalgic "Spring Day" stood out. Despite the drawbacks of the show, it is free this year, courtesy of the library.
                                                                                                read more >http://www.sacbee.com/art/story/1543122.html

Gary Brewer's paintings, on show through April 12 at ArtZone 461 Gallery, are sensual invitations to pause and contemplate and enjoy the seductive beauty of nature. His renditions of orchids and anemones, coral, lichen, and mosses speak of the most recent biological discoveries, and proffer a visual vocabulary that describes the supra-natural world. Gary Brewer is collected and has shown nationwide since his first solo exhibition in 1989.
                                                                                                     read more >http://www.nobhillgazette.com/content/2009/April/on_the_coverApril09

On The Cover: Intimate Space by Gary Brewer

NobHill Gazette | Beate Clark | April 1, 2009

Linda Raynsford and Adam Cahoon use geometric/mechanical forms in their sculpture and painting, respectively; the name of their joint exhibition is Science Fusion. Nicholas Coley paints urban scenes in which the street or ground plane, treated abstractly, contrasts with realistically painted elements; his show is entitled Concrete Perspective.
                                                                                                          read more >http://www.artbusiness.com/1open/041809.html

Gary Brewer celebrates the wondrous forms and shapes that can be found in the natural world. Evolution has resulted in all sorts of strange and incredible forms, many of which are beyond our immediate understanding. Beauty has also been a selective factor. Brewer adds color and drama to his exposition of life. One cannot help but be amazed, to be attracted like a pollinator, to celebrate the denizens of light and brine.
                                                                                                          read more >http://www.artbusiness.com/1open/030709.html

Works by Linda Raynsford and Adam Cahoon are paired in "Science Fusion," a show opening with a reception from 5 to 8 p.m. Saturday at ArtZone 461. The stress is on elements of mechanical, biological and/or interpersonal connectivity. Both artists use imagery such as spheres and spirals to address concepts of space, time and awareness. In the Side Gallery, ArtZone 461 concurrently is exhibiting "Concrete Perspective," featuring Bay Area plein air painter Nicholas Coley.
                                                                                                             read more >http://findarticles.com/p/articles/mi_qn4176/is_20090417/ai_n31577005
