Charles Shere was born in Berkeley, California, in 1935, and grew up there and on a small farm in Sonoma county.
A writer and composer, he studied English literature, musical composition, and conducting. His music, influenced by Ives, Webern, Stockhausen, Thomson, Cage, Duchamp, Stein, and Joyce, includes graphic and standard notation, open and closed forms, and tonal and non-tonal harmonic language.
